If a student loan you never opened is showing on your credit report, you need two things:
- ✅ A proper identity-theft packet (FTC + police report)
- ✅ A paper trail showing the lender + bureaus got notice (Step 3)
Im Ali Zane, a credit advocate with 20 years of experience at Imax Credit Repair
My associate attorneys and I have a 100% success rate with removing fraudulent student loans from credit report
Here is the 4 step process we’ll follow:
- 1️⃣ Identify whether the loan is federal or private + who is reporting it
- 2️⃣ File FTC + police reports (your strongest leverage)
- 3️⃣ Mail disputes to the lender/servicer/collector + bureaus (proof matters)
- 4️⃣ If they refuse after notice → you may be entitled to legal damages 💰
Here’s the best part – I offer free legal help‼️ (seriously)
If you’ve got fraudulent student loans reporting on your credit, I can guide you through the exact documentation that gets these removed.
In many cases, if the reporting isn’t corrected after proper notice, our associate attorneys can pursue remedies where the other side pays the legal fees.
Most people don’t know this BUT there’s no reason for you do this alone.

STEP 1️⃣ : Confirm what’s reporting (and who owns it)
Your goal is to identify:
- Which bureau(s) show the fraudulent student loan
- Who is reporting it (servicer, lender, or a collection agency)
- Whether it’s federal or private
1A) Pull your credit reports and print the pages that show the loan
- Print/screenshot the page where the student loan tradeline appears.
- Print/screenshot any related collection tradeline (if present).
- Print/screenshot any inquiry from the lender/school/collector.
1B) If you think it’s federal, check StudentAid.gov
- If it’s in StudentAid.gov, that strongly suggests it’s federal.
- If you can’t log in or details look changed, reset credentials immediately.
1C) Call the lender/servicer/collector and request a fraud investigation
- Tell them: “This is identity theft. I did not authorize this student loan.”
- Ask them to mark it as fraud and stop reporting while they investigate.
- Ask for written confirmation + a reference number.
GOOD NEWS: If they don’t remove it after proper notice, you may have legal leverage 💰
If you mail your FTC + police packet and the lender/servicer/collector and/or bureaus still keep reporting the fraudulent loan, that’s when legal leverage can appear.

STEP 2️⃣ – File your FTC + police reports (this is the leverage)
The 2-anchor stack
FTC Report ✅ + Police Report ✅ = your strongest dispute package
STEP 2A – File an FTC Identity Theft report
- File here: IdentityTheft.gov
- List the student loan lender/servicer/collector, and any fraudulent inquiry.
- Save/print the final report (attach it in Step 3).
STEP 2B – File a police report
- File online if your department allows it; otherwise file in person.
- Bring ID + proof of address + credit report pages showing the loan.
- Make sure it clearly states: student loan identity theft / fraud.
Note: Its a federal and state offence to make an untrue statement in a Police report or FTC report. Under no circumstances file these reports unless you’re 100% sure that the accounts are fraudulent.
STEP 3️⃣ – Mail your removal packet (this is what forces deletion)
Online disputes are easy to ignore. Certified mail creates proof of notice — and proof matters if you get denied.
3A) Build your “Fraudulent Student Loan Removal Packet”
- Your fraud narrative letter (template below)
- FTC report
- Police report
- ID + proof of address (utility bill, cell bill, bank statement)
- Credit report pages showing the fraudulent loan / collection / inquiry
One Master “Fraudulent Student Loan” Letter (use in EVERY packet)

3B) If it’s a FEDERAL student loan: include the identity-theft discharge request
- Federal loans can often be addressed with a false certification (identity theft) discharge request.
- Attach your FTC + police reports and keep copies of everything.
STEP 4️⃣ – If they refuse to remove the fraudulent student loan (damages can appear 💰)
Once you’ve sent your FTC + police report packet by mail (Step 3) and you have proof of notice, the lender/servicer/collector and bureaus are expected to correct inaccurate identity-theft reporting.
If they keep reporting it anyway, your options can include escalation and potential legal remedies.
