STEP 1️⃣ : Identify the loan + freeze the damage
Your first goal is to stop new activity and get the loan details (who holds it, who services it, what school it’s tied to).
1A) Check your credit reports
- Look for the lender/servicer name (and any collection agency).
- Screenshot/print the page where the fraudulent loan appears.
- Also look for weird addresses, phone numbers, or inquiries you don’t recognize.
1B) If it’s a federal student loan: check StudentAid.gov
- Log in to see federal loan history, servicer name, and loan type.
- If you can’t log in or your info looks changed, assume compromise and reset credentials immediately.
- If you suspect your StudentAid.gov account was compromised, change your password and contact Federal Student Aid (FSA) support.
1C) Contact the servicer / lender immediately
- Tell them: “This is identity theft / fraud. I did not authorize this loan.”
- Request a fraud investigation and ask for written confirmation.
- Ask for administrative forbearance (pause payments/collections) while it’s investigated.
- Write down: date/time, rep name, reference number.
GOOD NEWS: If they don’t fix it after proper notice, you may have legal leverage 💰
If fraudulent student loans (or collections) are reporting on your credit and they don’t correct it after you send the right packet by mail, you may have legal remedies.

STEP 2️⃣ – File your FTC + police reports (non-negotiable)
The 2-anchor stack
FTC Report ✅ + Police Report ✅ = your strongest dispute package
STEP 2A – File an FTC Identity Theft report
- File here: IdentityTheft.gov
- List the student loan lender/servicer + any collections + any fraud inquiries.
- Save/print the final report (you’ll attach it in Step 3).
STEP 2B – File a police report
- File online if your department allows it; otherwise file in person.
- Bring ID + proof of address + credit report pages showing the loan.
- Make sure the report clearly states: student loan identity theft / fraud.
NOTE: its a federal and state offense to lie on a police report and FTC report, If you’re not 100% sure these loans are fraudulent, then under no circumstance file these reports before getting all the facts .
STEP 3️⃣ – Mail the dispute + (if federal) the discharge packet
This is where people win. You’re creating a clean evidence trail that forces correction—or sets up liability if they refuse.
3A) Build your “Student Loan Fraud Packet” (simple)
- Your fraud narrative letter (template below)
- FTC report
- Police report
- ID + proof of address (utility bill, cell bill, bank statement)
- Credit report pages showing the fraudulent loan/collection
One Master “Student Loan Fraud” Letter (use inside every packet)

Mailing addresses (Student loan company + credit bureaus)

Tip: If you mail disputes, consider a service like LetterStream so your exact letter + attachments + proof of mailing are preserved digitally.
3C) If it’s a FEDERAL student loan: submit the identity theft discharge application
- Federal Student Aid has a False Certification (Identity Theft) discharge application.
- Include that application with your packet to the loan holder/servicer (and keep a full copy).
- This is how many federal-loan identity theft cases get permanently cancelled.
STEP 4️⃣ – If they refuse to fix it (this is where damages can appear 💰)
Once you’ve mailed your FTC + police report packet (Step 3) and you have proof of notice, the law expects accurate reinvestigation and accurate reporting.
If they keep reporting a fraudulent student loan/collection after proper notice, you may have legal options to:
- Force removal/correction
- Stop collections
- Recover monetary damages (in the right fact pattern) 💰

FAQ: Student Loan Fraud
How do I know if a student loan was taken out in my name?
It usually shows up as a new tradeline (student loan) or a collection account on your credit report. If it’s federal, it may also show inside your StudentAid.gov account.
Should I dispute student loan fraud online?
I prefer disputes by mail (Step 3) because you get proof of notice. Proof matters if the lender/servicer or bureaus refuse to correct the reporting. Just simply disputing it online will not rectify the issue, you need to start with notifying the lender , then filling the FTC and police report, and mailing the disputes to the credit bureaus and the lender.
What if the loan is PRIVATE (not federal)?
Same core process: call the lender, file FTC + police, then mail your dispute packet to the lender and the bureaus. Private lenders still have duties once they receive proper notice.
What if the student loan company refused my fraud/ id theft claim?
If you’ve sent your FTC + police report packet by mail (Step 3) and have proof of notice, then you’re most likely entitled to legal damages 💰. Student loan services often deny claims,
even though, a company should not deny your claim unless they have evidence that the fraud was done by you.
