STEP 1️⃣ : Identify the student loan + lock down your accounts
Your goal here is to confirm the loan type (federal vs private), find the servicer, and stop additional damage.
1A) Pull your credit reports and print the pages showing the loan
- Print/screenshot the student loan tradeline (and any collection tradeline tied to it).
- Print/screenshot any inquiry from the lender/servicer/school.
- Look for mismatched phone numbers, addresses, or employers that aren’t yours.
1B) If you suspect a federal student loan, check StudentAid.gov
- Federal loans usually show in StudentAid.gov (with servicer info).
- If you can’t log in or your profile info looks changed, reset credentials immediately.
1C) Contact the lender/servicer/collector and request a fraud/ID theft case
- Tell them clearly: “This student loan is identity theft. I did not authorize it.”
- Ask them to flag it as fraud and pause collections while it’s investigated.
- Ask for written confirmation and a reference number.
GOOD NEWS: If they refuse after proper notice, you may be entitled to money damages 💰
If the loan (or collections) is reporting on your credit and they don’t correct it after you mail the right packet, legal leverage can appear.

STEP 2️⃣ – File FTC + police reports (this is your leverage)
The 2-anchor stack
FTC Report ✅ + Police Report ✅ = your strongest ID theft dispute package
STEP 2A – File your FTC Identity Theft report
- File here: IdentityTheft.gov
- List the student loan lender/servicer/collector + any related inquiries or collections.
- Save/print the final report (you’ll attach it in Step 3).
STEP 2B – File your ID theft police report
- File online if your department allows it; otherwise file in person.
- Bring ID + proof of address + printed credit report pages showing the fraudulent loan.
- Make sure the police report clearly states: student loan identity theft.
Note: Its a federal and state offence to make an untrue statement in a Police report or FTC report. Under no circumstances file these reports unless you’re 100% sure that the accounts are fraudulent.
STEP 3️⃣ – Mail your student loan identity theft dispute packet (paper trail = power)
This step is how you force correction. Online disputes are easy to ignore. Certified mail creates proof of notice.
3A) Build your “Student Loan Identity Theft Packet”
- Your dispute letter (template below)
- FTC report
- Police report
- ID + proof of address (utility bill, cell bill, bank statement)
- Credit report pages showing the fraudulent loan / collection / inquiry
One Master “Student Loan Identity Theft” Letter (use in EVERY packet)

Tip: If you mail disputes, consider a service like LetterStream so your exact letter + attachments + proof of mailing are preserved digitally.
3B) If it’s a FEDERAL student loan: include the identity-theft discharge request
- Federal loans can often be addressed with a false certification (identity theft) discharge request.
- Attach your FTC + police reports and keep copies of everything.
STEP 4️⃣ – If they refuse to fix it after notice (this is where damages can appear 💰)
Once you’ve mailed your FTC + police packet and you have proof of notice, a company should not keep reporting a fraudulent student loan unless they have evidence it was actually you.
If they keep reporting it anyway, you may have legal options to force removal and potentially recover monetary damages.

FAQ: Student Loan Identity Theft
How do I know if student loans were taken out in my name?
You’ll usually see a student loan tradeline (or a collection tradeline) on your credit reports. If it’s federal, it often also shows in StudentAid.gov.
Should I dispute student loan identity theft online?
I prefer disputes by mail (Step 3) because you get proof of notice. Proof matters if you’re denied and need to escalate. I recommend following steps 1-3 meticulously, if you miss a step or don’t execute properly, then the servicers or bureaus can easily deny your claim due to incompleteness.
What if the student loan is private?
Same core process: call the lender, file FTC + police reports, then mail the dispute packet to the lender/collector and the bureaus.
What if the student loan company or credit bureaus denied my ID Theft claim?
If you’ve sent your FTC + police report packet by mail (Step 3) and have proof of notice, then you’re most likely entitled to legal damages 💰.
Basically a company should not deny your claim unless they have evidence that the fraud was done by you.
