If you’ve got a fraudulent Amex account reporting on your credit file… there’s no reason to struggle solo.

Even if you follow every step perfectly, Amex or the bureaus can still deny or “verify” fraud. If that happens after proper documentation + proof of notice, you may have enforceable rights (and potentially money damages).

Want a credit advocate guiding this process? We’ll help you build a bulletproof packet and an escalation path if they deny.

4-step flowchart to remove a fraudulent American Express account from your credit report

STEP 1️⃣ : Call American Express (and ask these questions) ☎️

Start here because Amex can sometimes close/freeze a fraudulent account quickly — or at minimum, they’ll give you the facts you need for your FTC/police reports and your dispute packet.

Safest option: call using the number inside your Amex app, a letter you received, or the back of a card you already had. (Avoid random “fraud numbers” from Google.)

Questions to ask and things to request ✅

  • “What is the account type and the date it was opened?”
  • “What mailing address, phone, and email are on file?”
  • “Was an authorized user added? If yes, when?”
  • “Is there an associated credit inquiry date?”
  • “Has this been sent to collections or sold? If yes, to who?”
  • “Please close/freeze the account due to identity theft and stop reporting it.”
  • “What is my case number and where exactly do I send my identity theft packet?”

Important: calling is Step 1 — but mail is what creates evidence. If anyone denies later, your mailed packet + proof of delivery is what protects you.

GOOD NEWS: If Amex doesn’t delete the fraud accounts, you may be entitled to monetary damages 💰

If you’re a legitimate victim and Amex/bureaus don’t correct fraudulent reporting after proper notice + documentation, it can become enforceable. In many cases, we can help with no upfront fees.

STEP 2️⃣ : Freeze your credit + pull your reports 🧊

  • ✅ Place a credit freeze with all bureaus (best), or at minimum a fraud alert
  • ✅ Save your credit reports from all bureaus as PDFs
  • ✅ Highlight the fraudulent Amex tradeline + any Amex inquiry

Pro tip: identity theft rarely stops at one account. Scan for other new tradelines, inquiries, or address changes.

STEP 3️⃣ : File your identity theft reports (FTC + police) 🧾

The 2-anchor stack ✅

FTC Report ✅ + Police Report ✅ = your strongest dispute package

STEP 3A – File an FTC identity theft affidavit

  • File at: IdentityTheft.gov
  • List: American Express + the fraudulent account + any inquiry
  • Save/print the completed report

STEP 3B – File an identity theft police report

  • File online if your department allows it; otherwise file in person
  • Bring: ID + proof of address + credit report page showing the fraudulent Amex account
  • Use the “master narrative letter” below inside your police report narrative field

Note: Its a federal and state offence to make an untrue statement in a Police report or FTC report. Under no circumstances file these reports unless you’re 100% sure that the accounts are fraudulent.

One Master “American Express Fraud Account” Letter (copy/paste) ✍️

✅ Use this in 3 places: (1) police report narrative, (2) FTC report details, (3) mailed dispute packets.

Include You: Name, Address, Mobile #, Email

I am a victim of identity theft and fraud. The following American Express account(s), charges, and/or credit inquiry are fraudulent. I did not authorize them, did not benefit from them, and did not give anyone permission to use my personal information.

A) Fraudulently Opened American Express Account
– Account ending in: [XXXX] (or “unknown”)
– Open date (if known): [__/____]
– Reported balance: [$____] (if shown)
– Reason: This account was opened without my knowledge or consent. I have never used it and received no benefit from it.

B) Unauthorized Credit Inquiry (if applicable)
– Creditor: American Express
– Inquiry date: [__/____]
– Reason: I did not authorize this application/inquiry.

I am requesting that American Express close/remove the fraudulent account and correct any inaccurate reporting to the credit bureaus. I am also requesting that the credit bureaus block/delete this identity theft information from my credit reports.

Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]

STEP 4️⃣ : Mail your identity theft dispute packet (Amex + bureaus) 📬

Now you create the evidence trail: proof of notice + proof of contents.

✅ What to include in every packet

  • Master narrative letter (above)
  • FTC report
  • Police report
  • Government ID (copy)
  • Proof of address (copy) — utility bill / bank statement / cell bill
  • Credit report pages showing the fraudulent Amex account (highlighted)
  • Any Amex letters you received (if any)

✅ How to mail it

  • Certified Mail Return Receipt (CMRR) when possible
  • Keep a full PDF copy of everything you sent
  • Optional: use an online mailing service (like LetterStream) so the exact packet + proof is archived digitally

If American Express or the bureaus don’t fix it ⚖️

Good news: you may be entitled to monetary damages 💰

If the fraudulent reporting isn’t corrected after proper notice + documentation, you may be dealing with FCRA and/or FCBA violations depending on what happened.

This is why the paper trail matters. Denials after a complete identity theft packet (FTC + police + proof of delivery) can create serious leverage.

If you were denied after you mailed the FTC + police packet with proof of notice, reach out. We’ll review your packet and your escalation options.

FAQ: Remove a fraudulent American Express account from your credit report ❓

What should I do first if a fraudulent Amex account is on my credit report?

Start with Step 1: call Amex and open a fraud/identity theft case. Get a case number and the exact address/upload method for your packet. Then freeze your credit, file FTC + police reports, and mail your dispute packet to Amex + the bureaus with proof.

Why do you make me call Amex first?

Because you need facts. The date opened, address on file, whether an authorized user was added, and whether the account was sent to collections helps your FTC/police narrative and can prevent denial later.

Should I dispute online with the credit bureaus?

I strongly prefer mail for identity theft cases because it preserves your evidence trail: what you sent, when it was delivered, and exactly what they received.

What if I never received mail or statements for the fraudulent Amex account?

That’s common. Thieves typically use a different address/email. In your narrative, clearly state you never received the card, statements, disclosures, or any benefit from the account.

Can I remove the Amex inquiry too?

Yes. If the account is fraudulent, the inquiry is typically removable too. Include it in your FTC report, police report, and mailed disputes.

How long does it take to remove a fraudulent Amex account from credit reports?

Once your packets are delivered, investigations typically take a few weeks. Your success rate improves when your first packet is complete and consistent across Amex + all bureaus.

What if Amex denies my identity theft claim?

Don’t accept a vague denial. Mail your FTC + police packet with proof of delivery and request written confirmation of the results. If they deny after proper notice, you may have escalation options.

What if the credit bureaus verify the fraudulent Amex account even after I mailed everything?

That’s exactly why we mail it. Verifying identity theft information after receiving a complete identity theft packet can create enforceable issues depending on what happened in the investigation.

What if the Amex refused my request to remove fraud account from credit report?

If your FTC + police packet was mailed with proof of notice, you’re likely entitled to legal damages 💰. A company shouldn’t deny unless evidence fraud was done by you. If you want, reach out and we’ll review what was sent and what your options are.s.

Let us delete amex for you ✅- $0 out of your pocket, and you may get damages 💰
